Considering how much trouble the Olympic runners are having keeping the torch lit with protesters trying to keep putting it out, I thought it would be a great idea for the Pope to carry it part of the way while both it and he are in the States 🙂

It’s doubly appropriate considering the rumors of the pope’s early Nazi sympathies.

Considering he was 12 years old when the war began, I don’t really think he had much of a choice in the matter. True, he could’ve avoided induction in the Hitlerjugend in 1941 (10-20% of the youth populace did), but he was already in seminary when he was drafted in 1943. BTW, the torch was not the product of Hitler, despite Jon Stewart the other day–it had begun being used in 1928. What was the product of the Nazi propaganda machine (dear old Dr. Goebbels came up with this one) was the carrying of the torch throughout the world. He convinced Adolf that it would be symbolic of Germany’s dominance in the world.
